IMDG Code Supplement
International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code Supplement
The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) lays out the regulatory framework for all aspects of handling dangerous goods and marine pollutants in sea transport but does not include all details of procedures for packing of dangerous goods or actions to take in the event of an emergency or accident involving personnel who handle goods at sea.
This Supplement presents the publications associated with the IMDG Code that cover these aspects of the transport of dangerous goods.
The 2024 edition of the Supplement features:
- the Revised Emergency Response Procedures for Ships Carrying Dangerous Goods (EmS Guide) taking into account Amendment 42-24 to the IMDG Code;
- the Medical First Aid Guide for Use in Accidents involving Dangerous Goods (MFAG);
- the Reporting procedures;
- the Recommendations on the safe use of pesticides in ships;
- the International Code for the Safe Carriage of Packaged Irradiated Nuclear Fuel Plutonium and High-Level Radioactive Wastes on board Ships (INF Code); and
- other appropriate resolutions and circulars pertaining to the transport of dangerous goods including Guidelines for the implementation of the inspection programmes for cargo transport units (MSC.1/Circ.1649) and the List of non-exhaustive voluntary guidance on pest contamination (MSC.1/Circ.1650).

IMDG Code
International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code

The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) lays out the regulatory framework for all aspects of handling dangerous goods and marine pollutants in sea transport.
The IMDG Code is divided into two volumes:
- Volume 1 containing sections on general provisions definitions and training; classification; packing and tank provisions; consignment procedures; construction and testing of packagings IBCs large packagings portable tanks MEGCs and road tank vehicles and transport operations and
- Volume 2 containing the Dangerous Goods List special provisions and exceptions Appendix A (list of generic and N.O.S. proper shipping names) Appendix B (glossary of terms) and the Index.
Since it was first published in 1965 the Code has undergone many changes in both format and content in order to keep up with the rapid expansion of the shipping industry.
Amendment 42-24 includes revisions to various sections of the Code and to transport requirements for specific substances. It was adopted by the International Maritime Organization’s Maritime Safety Committee at its one hundred and eighth session in May 2024 and is mandatory from 1 January 2026 but may be applied by Administrations in whole or in part on a voluntary basis from 1 January 2025.
The provisions of the Code should be of interest to maritime administrations shipping companies manufacturers packers shippers feeder services such as road and rail and port authorities.
SPS Code and IP Code
This publication includes the Code of Safety for Special Purpose Ships 2008 (2008 SPS Code) the new International Code of Safety for Ships Carrying Industrial Personnel (IP Code) and SOLAS chapter XV on safety measures for ships carrying industrial personnel.
The 2008 SPS Code sets safety standards for special purpose ships carrying ‘special personnel’ such as scientists and technicians involved in specific onboard activities. The IP Code which came into force on 1 July 2024 extends these safety principles to ships transporting ‘industrial personnel’. This new code addresses the safety requirements for the offshore and energy sectors ensuring safer transport and transfer of personnel involved in offshore industrial activities.
SOLAS
Of all the international conventions dealing with maritime safety the most important is the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea better known as SOLAS which covers a wide range of measures designed to improve the safety of shipping.
The Convention is also one of the oldest of its kind: the first version was adopted in 1914 following the sinking of the Titanic with the loss of more than 1500 lives. Since then there have been four more versions of SOLAS. The present version was adopted in 1974 and entered into force in 1980. This publication commemorates the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the 1974 SOLAS Convention a prominent international instrument for maritime safety.
This edition of the publication presents a consolidated text of the Convention its Protocol of 1988 and all amendments that have entered into force on or before 1 July 2024. Additionally this edition includes the unified interpretations of SOLAS regulations approved by the Maritime Safety Committee.
LC/LP Selection Guidance
The objective of this publication is to provide detailed step-by-step guidelines on the selection of dump-sites for the dumping of wastes and other matter at sea and on development of site management and monitoring plans to help manage dump-sites during and after use. These guidelines specifically address the wastes and other matter that may be considered for dumping at sea listed in annex 1 of the London Protocol.
Recueil SPS et Recueil IP
La présente publication contient le Recueil de règles de sécurité applicables aux navires spéciaux 2008 (Recueil SPS de 2008) le nouveau Recueil international de règles de sécurité applicables aux navires qui transportent du personnel industriel (Receuil IP) et le chapitre XV de la Convention SOLAS portant sur les Mesures de sécurité applicables aux navires transportant du personnel industriel.
Le Recueil SPS 2008 établit une norme de sécurité applicable aux navires spéciaux qui transportent du "personnel spécial" tel que des chercheurs et des techniciens qui participent à des activités spécifiques à bord. Le Recueil IP qui est entré en vigueur le 1er juillet 2024 étend ces principes de sécurité de base aux navires transportant du "personnel industriel". Survey of Machinery Installations and Compendium
This course equips maritime professionals with the skills to survey and assess machinery installations ensuring compliance with international standards. Flexible in design the course can be tailored to the trainees' knowledge levels and training needs. Validated by the IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment this course is a vital resource for standardizing machinery installation surveys enhancing safety and competence across the global maritime industry.
The course covers the requirements of initial annual intermediate and periodical and renewal surveys as specified in SOLAS. It does not cover preliminary design or plan approvals nor does it cover the survey or inspection of chemical tankers gas carriers special purpose ships or mobile offshore units.

La presente publicación contiene el Código de seguridad aplicable a los buques para fines especiales 2008 (Código SPS 2008); el nuevo Código internacional de seguridad para los buques que transportan personal industrial (Código IP) y el capítulo XV del Convenio SOLAS sobre medidas de seguridad para los buques que transportan personal industrial.
El Código SPS 2008 establece normas de seguridad aplicables a los buques para fines especiales que transportan «personal especial» como científicos o técnicos que participan en tareas específicas a bordo. El Código IP que entró en vigor el 1 de julio de 2024 amplía estos principios de seguridad básicos a los buques que transportan «personal industrial». Procédures de contrôle par l’État du port, 2023
Les inspections de contrôle par l’État du port contribuent à garantir que les normes maritimes mondiales sont appliquées de manière cohérente sur tous les navires. La présente publication a pour objet de donner des indications de base aux fonctionnaires chargés du contrôle par l’État du port (PSCO) sur la conduite des inspections en vue d’harmoniser l’exécution des inspections effectuées dans le monde entier.
La présente édition contient des amendements aux Directives sur l’immobilisation des navires (appendice 2) aux Directives relatives au contrôle par l’État du port en vertu de l’Annexe VI de MARPOL (appendice 18) et les nouvelles Directives pour l’inspection des systèmes antisalissure sur les navires (appendice 19).

واستجابةً لما أُقرِّ به من ضرورة ضبط الآثار البيئية للمواد الضارة المستخدمة في النظم المضادة للحشف ، اعتمدت المنظمة البحرية الدولية عام 2001 الاتفاقية الدولية بشأن ضبط النُظُم المضادة للحشف الضارة المستخدمة على متن السفن (اتفاقية النظم المضادة للحشف) السارية منذ عام 2008 .
وتتضمن هذه الطبعة الثالثة للاتفاقية النص الجامع لتعديلاتها بما في ذلك تعديلات المرفقين الأول والرابع المتعلقة بفرض ضوابط على السيبوترين وغير ذلك من التعديلات التبعية التي دخلت حيز النفاذ في 1 كانون الثاني/يناير 2023 فضلاً عن الخطوط التوجيهية الصادرة دعماً لتنفيذ الاتفاقية المعدَّلة.
Procedimientos para la supervisión por el Estado rector del puerto, 2023
Las inspecciones realizadas en el marco de la supervisión por el Estado rector del puerto contribuyen a garantizar que las normas marítimas mundiales se implanten de forma uniforme para todos los buques. Esta publicación contiene orientaciones para los funcionarios encargados de la supervisión por el Estado rector del puerto (PSCO) sobre la realización de inspecciones con el fin de ayudar a que estas se efectúen de manera armonizada en todo el mundo.
La presente edición incluye enmiendas a las Directrices para para la detención de buques (apéndice 2) las Directrices sobre la supervisión por el Estado rector del puerto en virtud del Anexo VI del Convenio MARPOL (apéndice 18) y las nuevas Directrices para la inspección de los sistemas antiincrustantes en los buques (apéndice 19).

SAR Administration (IAMSAR Manual, Volume I)

Instruments Relevant to Port State control, 2023

Directrices de 2023 para el control y la gestión de las incrustaciones biológicas de los buques a los efectos de reducir al mínimo la transferencia de especies acuáticas invasivas
Se ha determinado que la introducción de organismos acuáticos perjudiciales en nuevos entornos por parte de los buques constituye una importante amenaza para los océanos mundiales y para la conservación de la biodiversidad. Las incrustaciones biológicas descritas como la acumulación indeseable de microorganismos plantas algas y animales en estructuras sumergidas (especialmente en los cascos de los buques) se consideran uno de los principales vectores de las invasiones biológicas.
Las presentes Directrices de 2023 para el control y la gestión de las incrustaciones biológicas de los buques a los efectos de reducir al mínimo la transferencia de especies acuáticas invasivas tienen por objeto proporcionar un enfoque coherente a escala mundial para la gestión de las incrustaciones biológicas.
Código de buceo de 2023

El Código de buceo de 2023 fue adoptado mediante la resolución MSC.548(107) y se aplica a los buques de arqueo bruto no inferior a 500 que tengan un sistema de buceo instalado el 1 de enero de 2024 o posteriormente.
2023 Diving Code
This publication contains the International Code of Safety for Diving Operations 2023 (2023 Diving Code) which has been developed to enhance the safety of divers and diving support personnel to facilitate the international movement and operation of diving units and to provide a minimum international standard for the design construction and survey of diving units to safely support diving operations.
The 2023 Diving Code was adopted by resolution MSC.548(107) and applies to ships of not less than 500 gross tonnage that have a diving system installed on or after 1 January 2024.
SAR On-Scene Coordinator (IAMSAR Manual Volume III)
This model course aims to provide knowledge to those who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Search and rescue On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) for a Search and rescue incident as defined in the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and rescue Manual (IAMSAR) Volume III.

L’encrassement biologique décrit comme l’accumulation indésirable de micro-organismes de plantes d’algues et d’animaux sur des surfaces immergées (en particulier les coques de navires) est considéré comme l’un des principaux vecteurs d’invasions biologiques.
Les présentes Directives de 2023 pour le contrôle et la gestion de l’encrassement biologique des navires en vue de réduire au minimum le transfert d’espèces aquatiques envahissantes visent à fournir une approche cohérente à l’échelle mondiale de la gestion de l’encrassement biologique.
